Having a baby is expensive!

A recent study by Michelle H. Moniz, A. Mark Fendrick, and colleagues revealed that average out-of-pocket spending for maternity care in the U.S. spiked from $3,069 in 2008 to $4,569 (12% to 15%) in 2015. That is the cost to the consumer after any insurance payments are made. Increased spending with high deductibles was the main cause of this trend. Standardized maternity care expenses remained stable — $29,518 in 2008 and $29,314 in 2015 — despite rising out-of-pocket, after insurance payment spending.

The average total cost for out-of-hospital midwifery-based maternity care is just $3000 to $5000. It doesn’t take a calculator to figure out that 15% of $5000 is a lot less money ($750) than the same percentage of $29,314.
